Top Christmas Gifts for Special Needs Featured in The Holiday Edition of the AT Blog Carnival

Ho, Ho, Ho...you have ten days left until Christmas to get that last minute shopping done. You also have just a few days left to shop online and guarantee that you get what you ordered in time.
If you are stumped with what to buy and you are a parent, relative or friend of someone with a disability, then you might need some suggestions. We haven't seen or read a "Top Ten Special Needs Gift Ideas" list on any popular mainstream publications so I thought I would put out a call for suggestions from other assistive technology bloggers. We had a great response!

There are all kinds of cool gadgets and gifts in various price ranges. What is nice too is that the authors have given us their opinions and reviews on many of these items.

Read the Holiday Edition of the AT Blog Carnival, "My Favorite Things".
Enjoy...and Merry Christmas!

My Favorite Things: AT Christmas Gifts and AT Blog Carnival Holiday Edition Coming Soon

I don't know about you, but I don't usually see "Top Ten Christmas Gifts for the Special Needs and Disabled on Your List This Year". Christmas is approaching and I am planning a series on low to mid-priced ideas for an AT Christmas. I thought what better way to open up some ideas to special needs families than to share some great tools and educational software, so be watching for these reviews. I plan to do them early so folks have time to read and consider before they shop. Maybe I'll follow "The 12 Days of Christmas" theme for it. If so, I am going to have to get busy! If you have any ideas or suggestions for me to review email me at lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com

In that same vein, I thought it might be nice to have the AT Blog Carnival come out before Christmas this year rather than at the end of December, so I am announcing a topic and submission date below:

Now Taking Submissions for a Christmas Edition of Assistive Technology Blog Carnival: My Favorite Things. Share your favorite things you would like to have in AT or something you have already that you use and couldn't live without. We always love to hear what people use and love so share with us. Also, submissions on AT in general or in other areas is OK - so send in what you have to share over the next few weeks.
Deadline for submissions: Friday, December 12. Post date: Monday, December 15.
Send submissions to: lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com
Check out the Assistive Technology Blog Carnival for more details.

All the best to you!

Have A "Mad Scientist" Assistive Technology Halloween Party

It is officially Halloween Week! I have several posts to share with a Halloween theme this week as well as the release of our AT Blog Carnival Mad Scientist Edition coming out this Friday and a new No Limits 2 Learning Live Blog Talk Radio interview.

The mad scientist in me is having too much fun.
I hosted a weekend party up on our mountain this past weekend and the dinner Saturday night was a Thai meal. I dressed up in my asylum shirt, fake tattoo arms and hockey mask to serve the dinner.

Late Saturday night, I went to work on this month's Assistive Technology Blog Carnival and found an email submission from Alicia Odom, author of smdteacher blog. She had so many good ideas, I couldn't wait until Halloween day to post her link on the AT Blog Carnival, so I am linking it below so you can get some ideas from it. Maybe you can use something for your classroom party this week.

Mad Scientist Halloween Party

I love her games. integration of AT devices and supports. Thanks Alicia!

Make sure to check out the Assistive Technology Blog Carnival Mad Scientist Edition on Halloween Day. We have more from Alicia and others on creative uses for AT. There will also be some video clips on mad scientists, links to student activities in science and some other surprises. It's not too late for YOU to submit something either!
Submit to lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com

Tomorrow I will be sharing how to adapt some fun Halloween battery-operated toys for the orthopedically impaired and some cause and effect fun.
My guests for my talk show are starting to line up again after a brief hiatus to get my fall school schedule up and running. I made lots of contacts at Closing the Gap for interviews. DAISY Consortium is working with me on an interview possibly this Wednesday for No Limits 2 Learning Live - I will know soon and you can check back on Wednesday morning to see if it is happening in the afternoon that day or not. More details to follow...

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Call for Posts and Links for the Halloween "Mad Scientist" Edition of the AT Blog Carnival

Frankenstein made his monster, the farmer above grew his human-faced pumpkins... What do you "grow" with AT?
The October edition of the Assistive Technology Blog Carnival is on what you create using AT or maybe a "how to" to use AT. Maybe you use AT to support you in your vocation, to write, to do art, create music, produce video, maybe something surprising we wouldn't ever think of.
If you are an educator, maybe you would be able to share a link to a post on what you or others are creating with technology or something that has a use for AT. Artwork, music, poetry, video created with AT would be fun too. Adults or children's projects made using AT would be very cool...
I have 2 submissions/tutorials already from a teacher who shows us how to create some tools and activities that are useful and fun. Let the "Mad scientist" come out in you and share something with us.
If none of that sparks an idea, I thought about this..."What is your most "Scary" story concerning AT. A time it didn't work right, a time someone totally didn't get it and you thought, "That's scary"... I can think of me when I first was introduced to AT and I look back on what I didn't know and I think..."That's SCARY". It is amazing how much I have grown - but I still have a long way to go. And of course, if nothing fits for you, you are welcome to share whatever you like.
Send links to me by Monday, October 27 and I will post them for a fun issue posted on October 31, Halloween Day! Pass the word around and I hope to hear from some of you. I will also include some fun Halloween links for your enjoyment! You could include one of those too...
All the best to you!

Assistive Technology Blog Carnival Edition 5 is Up

The July Submissions for AT Blog Carnival Edition 5 are ready to read at http://atblogcarnival.blogspot.com. There are some great submissions that I know you will enjoy.
I was in a mall 10 days ago when the new 3 Gig iphone was coming out. A line was forming in the middle of the mall. With all the buzz on the new iphone and the new Google phone coming, I am glad we have an interesting review of the iphone touch screen and how folks with disabilities can or can't use it.
There is a fascinating new technology that really could open up things for the blind. Read about it on Edition 5 as well as a review of a picture address book for the MAc and my own sharing of my posts and radio show interview about Notescribe a new searchable data base program for your notes and research on recipes, articles, web sites, you name it...

All the best to you!

New Talk Show Guest, Interviews & AT Blog Carnival This Week

I have some quick news for you as to what is going on here at No limits 2 Learning. I was able to interview my uncle, Hubert Thornburg, who was a pioneering special education teacher in Oregon from the 1950's through the 70's. He saw the origin of special education in Oregon and was asked to be one of the first pioneer teachers for this in the state. I spent two mornings with him while on a family visit in Portland area last week. I have a lot of editing to do, but I think the interview will be interesting and enjoyable when it is done. I hope to have it up and some old pictures he shared with me by the time school starts in September.

The CEO of Notescribe, Jeff Sholl, will be my guest this week on No Limits 2 Learning Live on Blog Talk Radio. The show is being scheduled for Wednesday this week later in the day, but I will have more specifics for you tomorrow after we finalize the time, etc. Notescribe is a great way to put all your information under a search and keyword system. You can enter all your sources for citations so they are viewed in APA format for various media. If you are in college, working on a masters or doctorate - or just doing research, this software would be invaluable to you. The interview will be a chance for the founder to share about the software in more depth as well as share the story of how it came about. I am looking forward to it and hope you can listen in.

Our next edition of the Assistive Technology Blog Carnival is due out July 28. Submissions need to be to me by this Friday, July 25. I know folks are busy and on vacations, etc. so we will post what we get even if it is a smaller one this month. If you have a post to share, please send it to me at lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com

All the best to you!

I hope you enjoy these submissions!

Testimonials Share Value in No Limits 2 Learning Live Talk Radio and Blog

I am so excited to share with you feedback on the No Limits 2 Learning Live segments on Blog Talk Radio and this blog. My guest yesterday, Ellen Witham and myself, had emails from listeners who shared the value of her topic on AAC implementation from a parent's point of view.
One listener shared:
"Much of what you were talking about almost directly applies to a child in a Sunday school class I am teaching (2 year olds, in our third week). One child has a vocabulary of 4 words - mom is currently working with an SLP and as of yet there is no diagnosis. He obviously will benefit from a symbol communication system, and mom has been teaching him some sign language. We did a matching game with magnetic 'pictures' (I think they actually may have been PCS ala Boardmaker) symbols and a cookie sheet, and he was one of the brightest as far as comprehension went and was able to pick out matched pairs of specific symbols on demand. I will refer mom to your interview - I think you probably do not realize how much a few moments of your time will positively impact folks for years to come!"

I also received this comment:
"ALL of your interviews are useful and topical to broad groups of people. What a nice contribution for you to make to the world at large, to pull these things together and put them in one place so we can get to them and listen at our leisure."

I just wanted to share this with all of you. I know that sometimes we work on our projects fired only by our own passion. When we hear things like the above, it gives us a boost. I had a software/online tool representative contact me this past week and thank me for some positive and encouraging words given towards their project. It was shared that their team is small and they work very hard - to hear the feedback was a boost to them too!
My desire is to see that the resources appearing on this blog, the talk show and the AT Blog Carnival be positive, constructive and add to the assistive technology community in a larger way. When I hear that what I write is encouraging, or that the interviews we do are building into an archive that will "positively impact folks for years to come" I am humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude.
I must share that the number of readers returning to this blog continues to grow and the blog has now over 2000 reads a month. The combination of the numbers visiting and reading as well as the listeners on No limits 2 Learning Live encourage me. I am seeing upwards of 70 downloads of segments by listeners going to archives. I know that my efforts are doing some good and creating a foundation for greater resources down the road.
I have lined up some wonderful guests for July and August. I have been visiting with the DAISY Consortium to work on an interview for their folks to share on the future vision and services with the DAISY format - allow them to tell us what things they want to pass along, as well as allow you to call in and ask questions or make comments.
I have been visiting with with gh Accessibility to work on a time for their CEO to share his story of how the company got started - which has to do with supporting his wife with accessibility to alternative text while in college.
Next week, we have Gayl Bowser and Penny Reed, highly respected pioneers in AT implementation in education sharing on the team model. There are others as well that will be sharing over the summer.
I am so thankful for everyone's willingness to share. Knowing that these archives will become a valuable resource for folks down the road, means a lot. Thank you to all of you too as listeners and readers, commenters and emailers. This entire effort is FOR you and I am encouraged that things seem to be appreciated and are regularly read. I will continue to do my best to provide valuable resources, interviews and tips for AT users. I have a goal to get a bundle of activities, templates and tutorials as well as some other AT resources ready to make available online by the end of the summer. Some will be free and others for purchase at a nominal cost. Since I am on summer break for a month or so, my posts won't have quite the usual student stories and experiences until I get back to school in August. In the meantime, I am excited to focus on some video tutorials, share on some online tools and software to fill the gap.
I know many of you will be off on some summer adventures as well, so enjoy the time off. I will be taking my son camping a few days from the 4th of July (our U.S. Independence Day) on, and will try to set up some posts to be up on the days I am gone. If I miss a few and take some time off - forgive me and check back - I promise I won't miss very long, I would miss hearing from you and the folks I am working with to present new information for future projects.

All the best to you!

Last Call for Free Software Drawing & New Projects in the Works

The Deadline to submit your blog for the free software drawing is extended until Wednesday, June 18th. I will announce the winner on Thursday, June 19th.
Today was supposed to be the day to announce the winner in our free software drawing from Learning Magic. I had some huge-sized attached files sent to me on email the end of last week that filled up my set file space on my email/web server so I couldn't send or receive any emails. I have cleaned things up and set my space quota higher so that shouldn't happen again...
Anyway... I know I missed some emails - so, if you had tried to submit your blog for the drawing and couldn't get it to me, try again. I will leave this for 2 more days - to allow folks time to get them in. If you were contacting me for any other reasons, like an AT Blog Carnival submission or correspondence about an interview on blog talk radio or a review, please re-send your email to me again at: lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com It should work fine now - sorry for the inconvenience. I apologize.

New Projects: I am on summer break now, so I will actually have time to catch up on some leads from folks on new interviews, new software and web tool reviews, etc. I am so grateful to all of you that send me tips on things to look at, emails from companies that want to share resources for review, etc. All these things just allow for a more thorough look at what is happening around the world in AT.

I am looking forward to some major strides in what I am able to provide to readers in the future as I have some time to work this summer. Stay in touch and check-in even if you are on summer break too - there will be lots of good things coming...
I have an interview coming (date to be announced) with the founder of the gh Player, a player for DAISY files. He has an interesting story of how he developed the company and that should be fascinating.
I am working on an interview with Gayl Bowser and Penny Reed for July. Gayl and Penny are two incredible pioneers of the implementation area for AT, observation, evaluation and team building. They are sought after speakers nationally and happen to be Oregon-based so I have been able to spend time learning and gaining their wisdom. I am excited for that interview.
There are several more that I need to wait to tell you about until I firm them up better, but they should also prove to be very informative and challenging.

The June Edition of AT Blog Carnival submssion deadline is Friday June 27, so be thinking about what you would like to submit and share. The topic is wide open for you to share whatever you would like.
I am working on using the DAISY Pipeline tool for transferring DAISY XML files converted with the new MS Word add-in. As soon as I get that running smoothly, I will be sharing a tutorial on it. That is one of my goals this week. I'll try to get to it in between some yard work and enjoying the summmer weather.

Have a great week - All the best to you!

Assistive Technology Blog Carnival Edition 4: Calling for Submissions

Assistive Technology Blog Carnival #4, Issue: "Grab Bag"
Deadline: June 27 for submissions; Will be up June 30.

The next edition of the AT Blog Carnival, our 4th, will be out on June 30. We are calling for submissions by June 27 from those of you who have blogs and would like to submit a post on AT. This issue is a "grab bag" because we want to open this wide for folks to share whatever they have in their post archive or something new they would like to share on assistive technology. As submissions come in, I will group them as well as I can into categories. So, we want to hear what you have to say. What have you been learning about AT lately? What new gadget has you intrigued? What new area do you think is a frontier in research and development for servicing disability? I am excited to see new technology that is linking us together in greater ways everyday. I see huge potential to interface people with disabilities via Internet into work where the mind is the thing, not the body - the playing field is so much more level.
We are a little at a disadvantage because the Blog Carnival Service networks folks and provides a submission engine to blog carnivals and has a way to get the word out through their service base about what blogs are posting when and the topics, etc. We were getting quite a few submissions through that, but because they won't change their Captcha to something that assists disabled bloggers to submit, we are moving away from using them. This means more than ever, we need you to pass the word, submit posts and help us collect submissions from blog authors. Our purpose in this is to see more sharing of ideas and information and networking. I have felt that the editions so far have had great posts, information and have given us another link as a community. So, get your creative juices flowing and send in a post and pass the word on to others. It is a great way to get new visitors to your blog and create a larger audience.

The blog carnival home blog site with Editions 1, 2 and 3 as well as info on hosting it on your blog in the future and submission info is: http://atblogcarnival.blogspot.com

Email posts to: lonthornburg@nolimits2learning.com Remember the deadline - June 27

Also: Blog Contest Deadline, June 15th! The Drawing is still open for you to share your blog to have a chance to win. Just email me your blog address and your name and you will be put in our drawing for a free title of your choice from Learning Magic. Email your entry to the email address above.

Your email will never be sold, given out or added to someone's spam list - your privacy will always be respected.

All the best to you!

Learning Magic is Sponsor of Blog contest to Win Free AT Software

Learning Magic is donating free software to the winner of our Blog Contest.
Byron Wilkes, CEO and founder of Learning Magic (http://www.learningmagicinc.com/) is one of those rare individuals that gives out of a huge heart. His actions say "You receive by giving" and he does this with a joyful heart.
With a background in education, software design and a special needs child of his own, Byron left Intellitools to cooperatively build software that is high interest in the area of ecosystems, wildlife, nature and science. He has travelled the world to get his African wildlife photos, snorkeled the barrier reef to get footage of the marine life, etc. I reckon he could be the AT and education equivalent to the Crocodile Hunter, Marty Stouffer or Marlin Perkins!
If you are not familiar with his packages of software you need to check them out. Several years ago, Byron donated 2 days of his time to drive from Seattle to assist me in an assistive technology teacher institute. He donated a copy of each title to our library to load on our three laptops for folks to check out and try the software. They play on Intellitools, Clicker 5 and SoftTouch software like My Own Bookshelf and Test Me Score Me. He continues to send new titles as they come out and they are full of wonderful content that allow students to read, write, hear and watch wildlife and habitats. The cognitive levels allow struggling or developmentally delayed students to have high-interest content to challenge and captivate them. Byron has co-produced software with Ann Brundige, Patti Rea and Dr. Caroline Musselwhite.
Over the next weeks of the contest, I will share some of the CD's that are in the Learning Magic collection. Intellitools is offering the ITAN player for the titles that play with their software. This will allow folks who buy a CD using Intellitools products to use the attached player to play the titles for no additional charge. It is being tested right now and will be released as soon as it is found stable with the older software titles.
So join me in visiting their site and thanking Byron for investing and believing in blogging as a resource for assistive technology specialists, educators, students and parents. If you don't know about our contest, read the rules for entry. The deadline is June 16th - so start blogging!

New Blog Talk Radio Guest & May AT Blog Carnival Theme Announced

Second Chance to Live on Blog Talk Radio Today!
What happens when you are told that your ten year old son, who just suffered a traumatic brain injury, will probably be lucky to graduate from high school? Do you tell him he won't go very far academically? Do you go into denial? Do you keep it from him and let him achieve on is own terms?
No Limits to Learning Live will host Craig Phillips, the ten year-old boy, who went on to earn his Masters in counseling and vocational rehabilitation. The segment will be live this morning, May 9, at 10:30 am Pacific time at http://blogtalkradio.com/nolimits2learninglive .

Craig taught himself to walk, talk and read again. He has the blog "Second Chance to Live", where he shares his philosophy on dealing with an "invisible injury" and how to combat it with positive principles. Craig has been published in many international publications. His unique perspective as a counselor and a TBI survivor makes him a great follow-up to the interview last week with Patricia Sublette Ph D, who shared on TBI treatment, awareness education and assistive technology.
Join us for a call-in, listen-in, or listen to the archive later on the player on my sidebar. The profile link on the player will take you to the No Limits to Learning Live Blog Talk Radio page as well.

The AT Blog Carnival Theme for May is "Synthesized Speech".
We are now taking post submissions from blog authors on the topic "Synthesized Speech". Send in your permalink of a post off your blog that you have already written or one you write especially for this edition. Share a story about using synthesized speech, a site or software review, your list of uses for it, humor, gripes and complaints, etc. Let us hear what you have to say about it! If you know someone that has a blog that could contribute, pass this along to them. Because I am not officially using the Blog Carnival service to invite and receive posts, your help in networking the topic, link and getting it to bloggers is crucial. Help us spread the word and build a great network of shared knowledge.
Also, if you have an idea you would like to see for a future topic, email it or post a comment telling us. Your ideas will help!

Final Week to Submit to AT Blog Carnival and Other News...

The Assistive Technology Blog Carnival for April will be released soon so this week is the last chance to get in on it. The deadline for submissions is this Friday night, April 25th. I will put it together and have it up next Monday, April 28th. I have enjoyed reading through posts that have been sent and am in the process of replying to folks and getting the blog ready.
If you have a post that you have written on AT and would like it included, please check out the carnival blog site at: http://atblogcarnival.blogspot.com/. I have been happy with the response even though it has just started. We had a problem with the website of the people who originally conceived the idea and host the listings of all the blog carnivals and act as a go-between to send the host submitted posts. They have, as you have probably read on my sidebar, not done anything about the requests to use Recaptcha or something like it that will allow the blind to submit. I haven't heard anything from them as of yet and I sent them an email a week ago. We are just leaving them out of the loop and doing our own blog post sharing from the Blogger Assistive Technology Blog Carnival Blog I set up. You can find all the information and details there ( at the link above). I am disappointed that we have not heard something from them. I told them that I would love to be able to write to everyone that they had corrected the issue, but I'm not sure where they sit with it all. They probably just think that we are hecklers that are emailing them . Too bad.
Well, I hope you have a great week. I am back from some walks on the beach and time with family. I got my engines re-charged and I'm ready to tackle some fun projects this week. One is to set up a time to do a No Limits to Learning Live Blog Talk Radio Interview on Traumatic Brain Injury with Patricia Sublette Ph.D. I will let you know when this will occur. I am shooting for this Thursday morning - we'll see. If you didn't listen, there is a great interview with Richard Ellenson from The Tango! Company, Blink Twice. you can listen on my side bar.
I am working on a day workshop class on setting up a blog from scratch with the widgets that will help you keep track of readers, learn some basic multi media techniques and ways to use blogs to enhance how you serve. This blog has been a wonderful resource for me in many ways. I will share some of my ideas with you as I put them together.
I have been working with a boy who has CVI (here is a link on it from APH) and have developed some PowerPoint Activities with large letters on contrast for him to see, as well as some large tracking movement and sound he enjoys. The vision specialist and I have also been using a set of pre-braille touch overlays with textures and shapes from American Printing House for him to use. The software works with Intellikeys and Classroom Suite. I would like to do some variations on those and get some more video tutorials posted. So much I want to do and I just have to take it a little at a time.
I have to say that I appreciate the comments that are made. They add so much and I learn from them so don't be shy - let's hear some more of you give us your contributions.
Check in and watch for more to come. It's fun to discover new things to share with you. I am planning ahead and laying out some great things for May and beyond.
All the best to you!
